How to burn bakhoor

On charcoal: light a charcoal disc in a heat-proof burner (a mabkhara or dani) and wait until it is covered in grey ash, then place one small piece of bakhoor on top. On an electric burner: switch it on, let the plate warm for a minute or two and add a piece. Either way, a small piece is enough to scent a room. Never leave a lit burner unattended.

Scenting clothes and hair

Hold a garment or scarf a safe distance above the rising smoke for a few seconds, or let the smoke drift through a wardrobe with the doors open. For hair, stay well clear of the burner and let the smoke pass over, never close to the heat.
