What makes an attar Arabic

Arabian perfumery builds from the base upward. Oud, amber, musk and resins carry the composition, with rose, saffron and spice layered over the top. The result is rich and warm, with a slow development that can last well into the evening.

Where to start

If you are new to this style, a musk or amber attar is the gentlest introduction. Oud is the signature of the tradition but has a smoky, resinous depth that takes a little getting used to, so try it in a small 3ml size first. Our guide to oud vs musk explains how the two great base notes differ.

When to wear them

Arabic attars come into their own in the evening, in cooler weather and at weddings, Eid and other occasions. In an air-conditioned office or peak summer heat, use a lighter hand: one dab is usually enough.
