“White oud” and “black oud” are two of the most searched oud names in India, and they confuse a lot of people. It sounds as if there are two kinds of oud wood, one pale and one dark. There are not. The words describe two different styles of oud blend, and once you know what each style is going for, choosing between a white oud attar and a black one becomes easy.
What “white oud” actually means
Oud comes from agarwood, the resin-soaked heartwood of Aquilaria trees. Our guide to what oud is explains how that resin forms. Real oud oil is not white or black. Depending on the wood and the distillation, it ranges from pale golden to deep reddish brown.
There is no “white oud tree” and no “black oud tree”. When you see White Oud on an attar or perfume bottle, it is a name for a style of blend:
- White oud usually means a softer, cleaner oud. The woody note is still there, but it is wrapped in white flowers, musk, vanilla or amber. It smells smooth and polished rather than smoky.
- Black oud usually means the opposite: a darker, heavier style that leans into smoke, leather, spice and the animal, barnyard side of oud that some people love and others find difficult.
So White Oud is not a grade of agarwood, and it does not tell you how much real oud is in the bottle. For how oud oils are actually graded and priced, read our guide to oud grades.
White oud vs black oud at a glance
| White oud style | Black oud style | |
|---|---|---|
| Overall feel | Soft, creamy, floral, musky | Dark, smoky, leathery, intense |
| How much oud you notice | A gentle woody background | Oud is the main event |
| Projection | Close to moderate | Usually stronger |
| Best for | Daytime, office, first-time oud wearers | Evenings, winter, people who already love oud |
| Risk in a crowded room | Low | Higher, so apply less |
Neither is better. They are simply made for different moments and different noses.
What our White Oud smells like
Our PV White Oud Attar is our own version of the style, and it sits firmly on the soft, floral side:
- Top: gardenia, jasmine and white rose. It opens bright and flowery.
- Heart: magnolia, osmanthus and peony. Creamy petals with a faint apricot-like softness from the osmanthus.
- Base: oud, amber, bourbon vanilla and musk. This is where the wood shows, smoothed with vanilla and musk.
The oud here is a warm backbone, not a smoky blast. That is exactly why people who have been put off by strong oud often like it. It is unisex, and it comes in 3ml, 6ml, 12ml and 24ml, from ₹149.
Attar or Pure Perfume?
The same scent is also available as a spray, the PV White Oud Pure Perfume, from ₹249 in 30ml to 200ml sizes. Pure Perfume is our name for our Eau de Parfum sprays, which are alcohol-based.
- Choose the attar if you want an alcohol-free oil, like to apply it with a dab, and prefer a scent that stays close to you.
- Choose the Pure Perfume if you want quick application and a little more spread in the first hour, for example before a party.
Who white oud attar suits
- Beginners. If you are curious about oud but nervous of it, start with a white oud. You get the warmth of the wood without the smoke.
- Office and daytime. A soft floral oud will not fill a meeting room or a metro coach. Our White Oud is listed in our office and party picks for that reason. Our guide to perfume for office, party and travel has more on choosing for each setting.
- Warm weather. In a Hyderabad summer, a heavy black oud can feel overwhelming by noon. White oud styles are easier to live with. One dab is enough.
- Gifting. When you do not know someone’s taste, a white oud is a safer bet than a dark one.
Black oud styles, on the other hand, suit people who already enjoy strong, woody scents, winter evenings, weddings and nights out.
How to wear it
Dab a little on your wrists and the sides of your neck after a bath, when the skin is warm. For longer wear, touch a drop on your collar or cuff, after checking on a hidden bit of fabric that it does not mark.
In summer, one or two dabs is plenty. In winter you can go a little heavier. If you want more depth in the evening, you can add a dab of a darker oud or a musk over it.
Related attars to compare
- PV White Aoud Attar, from ₹149. A different blend from our White Oud, listed as floral, musky and woody. Worth smelling both side by side, because the names are close but the scents are not the same.
- PV Black Oud Attar, from ₹149. Our blend listed for men, with a musky, woody character.
- PV Oud Maliki Intense Attar, from ₹299. If you want the true dark style: artemisia, grapefruit and lavender on top, leather, spices and tobacco at the heart, and oud, ambergris and dark woods in the base.
- PV Rose Oud Attar, from ₹149. A middle path: rose, saffron and cinnamon over oud, cedar and nagarmotha. Richer than white oud, friendlier than black.
If you enjoy the floral side of white oud, our guide to Jannat al Firdaus attar covers a classic floral blend with oud in its base.
At our Hyderabad stores you can try White Oud and a darker oud on each wrist and wear them for an hour before you decide. That is the best test there is.
Questions people ask
Is white oud attar good?
It is a very good choice if you want an oud that is easy to wear every day. It will not give you the smoky, powerful character of a dark oud, so if that is what you are after, choose a black oud style instead. For a first oud, most people are happier starting with white.
What does white oud smell like?
Usually soft and clean: white flowers and musk on top of a gentle, warm wood. Our PV White Oud opens with gardenia, jasmine and white rose, moves into magnolia, osmanthus and peony, and settles on oud, amber, vanilla and musk.
White oud vs black oud: which is better?
Neither is better. White oud is lighter and suits daytime, office and warm weather. Black oud is darker and stronger and suits evenings, winter and people who already love oud. The words describe a style of blend, not a better or worse grade of agarwood.
Is white oud for women?
It is unisex. Its floral, creamy character appeals to many women, and plenty of men wear it too, especially to work. If you are a woman exploring oud, our guide on oud for women has more ideas.
Is white oud made from white agarwood?
No. There is no separate white agarwood used for these blends. The name refers to the soft, clean style of the scent. Healthy agarwood without resin is pale, but it is the dark resin that carries oud’s fragrance.
