Choosing a Fragrance for the Office, a Party or Travel

The same fragrance can be perfect in one setting and overwhelming in another. A rich oud that feels right at a wedding can fill an air-conditioned meeting room, and a light citrus that is ideal for the gym can disappear at a night-time party. Choosing by occasion is less about rules and more about how far a scent carries and what the people around you will notice.

For the office

The aim at work is to be noticed at conversation distance and no further. Offices are closed, air-conditioned and shared, so a strong scent travels further than you think.

• Families that work: fresh citrus, green notes, light florals, soft woods and clean musk.
• How much: one or two sprays, or a single dab of attar at the wrists.
• Avoid: heavy oud, very sweet gourmands and anything you can smell on yourself from across the room.

Evenings are when warmer, richer fragrances come into their own. Cooler night air and a livelier setting mean a scent with more presence feels right rather than intrusive.

• Families that work: amber, vanilla, oud, spice and rich florals.
• How much: a little more than at work, but still applied to the skin, not sprayed into the air around you.

On the road, practicality matters as much as the scent itself.

• Go small. A 3ml or 6ml attar takes almost no space in a bag and is much less likely to leak than a spray.
• Choose something forgiving. Temperatures change quickly when you travel. Balanced, versatile scents cope better than very heavy or very sharp ones.
• Keep it out of the sun. Never leave fragrance in a parked car or a hot bag.

For the gym and sport

Heat and exertion amplify fragrance, so keep it light and fresh: citrus, marine and green notes with a clean musk base, applied sparingly. The sports edit collects the freshest, sharpest end of the range.

For weddings and festivals

Rose, oud, sandalwood and amber are the traditional notes, and applied to the skin and clothing they last through a long day of celebrations.
