How Long Does Attar Last? Wear Time, Shelf Life and Storage

It is the first question most people ask about attar, and the honest answer is: longer than you might expect, but it depends. How long an attar lasts comes down to what it is made of, where you put it, your skin and the weather. This guide covers all four, then explains how long an unopened or opened bottle keeps and how to store it so the last drop smells as good as the first.

How long does attar last on skin?

Attar is a perfume oil with no alcohol in it. Alcohol is what makes a spray burst off the skin and then fade; without it, an oil evaporates slowly and stays close to the body. That is why a small dab of attar can often still be noticed hours after you applied it, while a spray of the same scent may have faded.

The notes matter more than anything else. Heavy base materials such as oud, sandalwood, amber, musk and resins are made of large molecules that evaporate slowly, so attars built on them last the longest. Citrus, green and light floral notes are small, quick molecules, so fresher attars fade sooner. If longevity is your priority, look for a woody, amber or oud profile. How long does attar last on clothes?

Much longer than on skin. Fabric does not warm up or absorb oil the way skin does, so the scent sits there and releases slowly, often for days on a kurta, shawl or scarf. Two cautions: oil can leave a mark on silk and other delicate fabrics, so test on a hidden seam first, and never apply attar to clothes you are about to iron.

Why the same attar lasts differently on different people

• Skin type. Dry skin has little to hold on to, so fragrance fades faster. Oilier skin holds scent for longer. A thin layer of unscented moisturiser before you apply helps dry skin a great deal.
• Body warmth. Warm areas such as the wrists, neck and inner elbows project scent more strongly but also use it up faster.
• Your nose gets used to it. After twenty minutes or so you stop noticing a scent you are wearing, even though the people around you still can. Many people think an attar has gone when it is still there.

Attar in Indian heat and humidity

Heat makes any fragrance project more loudly and burn off more quickly. In peak summer, a light hand with a fresher attar usually works better than a heavy oud, and you may want to reapply in the evening. How long does a bottle of attar keep?

Well-stored perfume oils keep for a long time, usually years rather than months. Because there is no alcohol to evaporate, an attar does not dry out the way a spray can. Some materials, sandalwood and oud in particular, are known to round out and deepen with age.

Fresher attars built on citrus oils are the exception: citrus is the most fragile material in perfumery and is the first to turn. Signs that an attar has gone off include a sour or sharp smell that was not there before, or the top notes disappearing entirely. A gradual darkening of colour on its own is normal for many natural oils and does not mean the scent has spoiled.

How to store attar

• Keep it somewhere cool and dark. Heat and sunlight break fragrance down faster than anything else.
• Close the cap tightly after every use, so air does not oxidise the oil.
• Store bottles upright to keep oil away from the cap seal.
• Avoid the bathroom, where steam and temperature swings do the most damage, and never leave a bottle in a parked car.
• Wipe the applicator rather than pressing it repeatedly onto skin, which carries skin oils back into the bottle.
