Oud for Women: Softer Oud Blends and Where to Start

Oud has a reputation as a heavy, smoky men’s scent, and in its raw form it can be. But oud is one of the most versatile notes in perfumery. Blended with flowers, vanilla or fruit, it becomes soft, warm and rich. Across the Gulf, women have worn oud for generations.

What makes an oud feminine

What matters is what surrounds the oud. Rose and jasmine turn it romantic. Vanilla and amber turn it warm and sweet. White flowers such as gardenia and peony make it creamy and bright. The oud stays in the base and gives the scent depth and staying power rather than smoke.

Five to try first

Musk Oud Attar (from ₹149). Rose and cypress over oud, incense and musk. It is the deepest of the five and suits cool evenings.

How to wear oud

Use less than you think. One dab of an oud attar at the wrists is enough for hours. For daytime, wear it under a floral: a dab of oud with a rose or jasmine attar on top. Oud develops slowly, so give it twenty minutes before you judge it.
