Fragrance is one of the most personal gifts you can give, which is exactly what makes it feel risky. The good news is that a few simple questions narrow the choice down a long way. This guide walks through them, with safe picks for when you are still unsure.
Start with what they already wear
The most useful clue is the fragrance they wear now, or the kind of scent they compliment on other people. You do not need a name, only a direction:
- Fresh: citrus, green, clean. Think of someone who likes things light and uncomplicated.
- Floral: rose, jasmine and other flowers, from soft to rich.
- Warm and woody: sandalwood, amber, oud and spice. Deeper, more noticeable scents.
- Sweet: vanilla, caramel and other gourmand notes.
Our guide to fragrance families explains each group, and Find Your Scent lets you browse the range by family once you have a direction.
Attar or spray?
An attar is an alcohol-free oil, dabbed on, that stays close to the skin and lasts. It suits someone who likes traditional fragrance, prefers something subtle, or will wear it to weddings, prayers and festivals. An eau de parfum is sprayed, projects further and suits someone who likes to be noticed. If you are unsure, attar vs perfume covers the difference in a few minutes. Size and budget
- Trying something new: a 3ml attar starts from ₹99, which makes a thoughtful small gift or a way to test a direction.
- A proper bottle: 6ml and 12ml attars, or a 50ml or 100ml eau de parfum, will last most people a long time.
- Presentation: most of our sprays come in a choice of plastic or glass bottle. For a gift, the glass bottle is worth the small difference. In our PV Collection, for example, a 50ml glass bottle is ₹499.
Safe picks when you are not sure
- Fresh and clean is the safest direction for a stranger or a colleague. PV KING opens on bergamot, freesia and green notes, and is available as both a spray and an attar.
- Soft floral-green suits someone who likes lighter florals. PV BAHA combines bergamot, green tea and rose.
- Traditional for a parent or grandparent: a rose attar such as Ruh Gulab.
- For the whole household: bakhoor, the scented wood chips burned to perfume a home, is a generous gift around Eid and Diwali. Bukhoor Malaki comes in 250g and 500g. Read what bakhoor is and how to use it if it is new to you.
Gifts for occasions
For festivals, weddings and religious occasions, attars are the traditional choice, and rose, oud and sandalwood are the classic notes. For birthdays, a colleague or a housewarming, a fresh or soft floral spray is easier to get right. Our occasion guide covers which families suit which setting.
Some families send fragrance with the wedding invitation itself. Scenting wedding cards with attar explains which attar to use and how to do it without staining the card.
