How to Choose Perfume for Indian Summers and Winters

The same perfume can smell completely different in May and in December. A rich amber that feels perfect on a cool winter evening can turn cloying on a humid afternoon, while a bright citrus that sparkles in the heat can vanish in the cold before you have left the house. In a country with weather as varied as India’s, choosing a fragrance for the season makes a real difference.

Why weather changes how perfume smells

Fragrance works by evaporating from your skin. Heat speeds that up, so in summer a perfume projects further and its light top notes disappear faster. Humidity holds scent in the air around you, which can make heavy, sweet fragrances feel suffocating. Cold slows evaporation down, so in winter a perfume sits closer to the skin, lasts longer and needs richer notes to be noticed.

The rule of thumb that follows: go lighter and fresher when it is hot, deeper and warmer when it is cold.

The best perfumes for Indian summers

• Apply to clothes as well as skin. Fabric holds scent without the heat of your body pushing it off.
• Keep fragranced skin out of strong sun. Some citrus oils can react with sunlight, so if you will be outdoors for long, apply to covered areas.
• Carry a 3ml bottle for a midday refresh instead of applying heavily in the morning.

Perfume for the monsoon

The monsoon brings high humidity, which traps scent close around you. This is the time for green, musky and light woody fragrances that feel clean in damp air. Soft musks work especially well. Save the heavy gourmands and dense ambers for later in the year.
