White Musk vs Black Musk: What Is the Difference?

Musk is one of the most asked-for notes in any attar shop. Customers usually ask for it by colour: white musk or black musk. The two are quite different, and knowing which you like makes choosing much easier.

A note on where musk comes from

Musk originally came from the musk deer. The deer is now protected, and modern perfumery uses musks made without animal material. The names “white” and “black” describe the style of the scent, not its source.

White musk

White musk smells clean, soft and powdery, like freshly washed cotton or warm skin. It is gentle, stays close and suits almost everyone. It is ideal for the office, for daytime and for prayer. Try:

• Musk Tahara Attar, from ₹149. Tahara means purity. A fresh, clean musk.
• Body Musk Attar, from ₹149. Musk with sandalwood and soft woods; a warm-skin scent.
• Tender Musk Attar, from ₹149. Peach and ylang-ylang, then rose and white flowers, on patchouli, vanilla and white musk.
• Musk Rose Attar, from ₹149. English rose and violet over musk.

Black musk

Black musk is darker and warmer. It usually leans earthy or woody, often with amber, oud or resins, and it projects a little more. It suits evenings and cooler weather. Try:

• Musk Oud Attar, from ₹149. Musk with oud, incense and patchouli, for the deep, smoky side of musk.

Which should you choose?
