Bergamot: The Citrus Hiding in Most Perfumes

Bergamot: The Citrus Hiding in Most Perfumes

Read the note list on almost any fresh perfume and one word keeps turning up near the top: bergamot. It is in sporty sprays, in sweet ambers and even in oud blends. Yet very few people in India have ever seen the fruit, let alone smelled it on its own. This guide explains what bergamot is and why so many bergamot perfume openings rely on it. It also covers why it is the first note to fade, and how to wear it well in an Indian summer.

What bergamot is

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a small citrus fruit, round to slightly pear-shaped, that turns from green to yellow as it ripens. It is grown mainly on a narrow coastal strip of Calabria, in the far south of Italy, around the city of Reggio Calabria. That region produces most of the world’s bergamot oil.

Unlike an orange, the fruit is far too sour and bitter to eat. Its value is in the peel. The oil is cold-pressed from the rind, with no heat, which keeps its fresh, sparkling smell intact.

Bergamot has been central to perfume for centuries. The original eau de cologne, created in the early 1700s in the German city of Cologne, was built around bergamot, lemon and orange blossom. Many modern fresh perfumes still follow that idea.

What bergamot smells like, and the Earl Grey connection

If you have ever had a cup of Earl Grey tea, you already know bergamot. Earl Grey is black tea flavoured with bergamot oil, and that bright, perfumed edge in the cup is the same smell perfumers use.

On its own, bergamot smells like this:

  • Citrus, but softer than lemon. It has the zing of lemon and the sweetness of orange, without lemon’s sharp sourness.
  • Slightly floral. There is a gentle, almost lavender-like softness behind the citrus. That is why bergamot sits so well with lavender, sage and rose.
  • A little green and peppery. A faint bitter, leafy edge keeps it from smelling like a sweet or a soft drink.

In short, bergamot is citrus with manners. It is bright and fresh, but rounded and easy to like.

Why bergamot is in so many top notes

Perfumers reach for bergamot for practical reasons as much as for its smell.

  • It makes a good start. The first minutes of a perfume decide whether someone likes it at the counter. Bergamot opens clean, bright and cheerful.
  • It bridges to almost anything. Its floral side links to lavender and rose, its green side links to herbs, and its sweetness links to amber and spice. Few notes blend so widely.
  • It lifts heavy bases. Put bergamot over oud, amber or patchouli and the opening feels lighter and fresher, even though the base is rich.

This is why bergamot appears in so many of our perfumes, from fresh blues to saffron ambers. Our guide to saffron in perfume shows it brightening a warm spice blend.

Bergamot fades first, and that is normal

Bergamot is a top note. Its scent molecules are small and light, so they evaporate quickly. On most skin the bright bergamot opening softens within the first 15 to 30 minutes, and the heart and base notes take over. Our guide to perfume notes explains how this hand-over works.

So if a fresh perfume smells wonderful at first and “disappears” by mid-morning, the bergamot has done its job. What stays all day is the base: musk, amber, woods or oud. A few ways to keep the fresh part around longer:

  1. Spray after a bath onto moisturised skin. Dry skin lets scent evaporate faster.
  2. Add one spray to your shirt or collar. Fabric holds top notes longer than skin does.
  3. Carry a 30ml bottle and refresh once in the afternoon, rather than spraying heavily in the morning.

Our guide on how to make perfume last longer has more tricks.

Bergamot in fresh perfumes and in oud perfumes

Bergamot behaves very differently depending on what lies underneath it.

In fresh perfumes, it leads a bright, clean character from start to finish. This is the style many men reach for in hot weather:

  • Fresh and aquatic: PV Aqua Di Jio Profondo Pure Perfume, from ₹499 for 30ml. Bergamot, green mandarin and sea notes, then lavender, rosemary and cypress, then amber, musk and mineral notes.
  • Fresh and sweet: PV Blu Dezire Pure Perfume, from ₹349 for 30ml. Bergamot with litchi, lotus and mandarin, over amber, benzoin, musk and tonka bean.
  • Fresh and peppery: PV Sovage Super Pure Perfume, from ₹499 for 30ml. Calabrian bergamot and pepper, then lavender, geranium and vetiver, then ambroxan, cedar and labdanum.
  • The Earl Grey idea: PV Imajination Pure Perfume, from ₹599 for 30ml. Calabrian bergamot, citron and orange, then cinnamon, ginger and neroli, with black tea, guaiac wood and olibanum in the base.
  • Clean and powdery: PV Kode Pure Perfume, from ₹349 for 30ml. Bergamot and bergamot leaf, then clary sage, iris and aldehydes, over cedar and tonka bean.
  • Fresh and fruity: PV Why Pure Perfume, from ₹349 for 30ml. Bergamot, lemon, ginger and mint, then apple and pineapple, then cedar, incense and musk. Our guide to pineapple perfumes explains that fruity side.

Aqua Di Jio Profondo, Blu Dezire and Sovage Super are among our most-ordered perfumes online.

In oud perfumes, bergamot plays a different role. It opens the door, then steps aside for the wood. Our new arrival PV Ameer One Pure Perfume, added in October 2026, is a good example. It is an aromatic, woody oud for women and men:

  • Top: bergamot, lemon, lavender and clary sage. Fresh, herbal and almost cologne-like.
  • Heart: sandalwood, rose, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley and patchouli. Soft florals over creamy wood.
  • Base: oud, amber and musk. Warm and woody, but smooth rather than smoky.

Because the opening is so fresh, Ameer One is the easiest of our new scents for someone trying oud for the first time. The Pure Perfume starts at ₹599 for a 30ml glass bottle (₹499 in plastic). The PV Ameer One Attar starts at ₹399 for 3ml. To see it next to the other three new arrivals, read our four new perfumes compared.

Wearing a bergamot perfume in an Indian summer

Bergamot is at its best in heat. It feels light when the air is heavy, and it does not turn sticky the way sweet notes can.

  • Morning commute and office: two sprays of a fresh bergamot scent before you leave. Our guide to perfume for Indian summers and winters has more on what works when.
  • Gym and sport: choose a clean, simple blend, and spray onto clothes after your shower rather than before the workout.
  • Monsoon: bergamot cuts through damp air well. Pair it with a woody or musky base so something stays after the citrus lifts.
  • Summer evenings: a bergamot opening over oud, like Ameer One, gives you freshness at first and warmth later, without feeling heavy.
  • Want it closer to the skin? Many of our scents, Ameer One included, also come as attars, which sit closer and last longer on skin. A 3ml attar is an inexpensive way to try one.

At our stores in Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki and Shaikpet you can try any of these at the counter before buying, every day from 11am to 11pm. Smell them again after twenty minutes, once the bergamot has settled. That is when you find out which one you actually like.

Questions people ask

What does bergamot smell like?

Bright citrus that is softer and sweeter than lemon, with a gentle floral, slightly lavender-like edge and a faint green bitterness. If you know Earl Grey tea, you know bergamot, because that tea is flavoured with bergamot oil.

Is bergamot the same as orange or lemon?

No. Bergamot is a separate citrus fruit, grown mainly in Calabria in southern Italy. It smells like a cross between lemon and orange with a floral twist. The fruit is too sour to eat, so it is grown mostly for the oil in its peel.

Why does the bergamot in my perfume fade so fast?

Because it is a top note, made of light molecules that evaporate quickly. Most bergamot openings soften within 15 to 30 minutes. That is normal, and the heart and base notes are designed to take over.

Is a bergamot perfume good for summer?

Yes, it is one of the best notes for hot weather. It feels fresh and clean without being sweet. In an Indian summer, refresh once in the afternoon instead of spraying heavily in the morning.

Is bergamot a men’s or women’s note?

Neither. Bergamot appears in perfumes for men, for women and for both. Our fresh bergamot sprays in this guide are listed for men, and PV Ameer One, with bergamot over oud, is listed as unisex.
