Perfume Notes Explained: Top, Heart and Base

Perfume Notes Explained: Top, Heart and Base

Spray a perfume on your wrist and smell it straight away, then again after half an hour, then again at lunch. It will not smell the same each time. That is not the perfume going off. It is the perfume doing exactly what it was built to do. Perfume notes, the top, heart and base, describe that change, and once you understand them you will choose perfume and attar with far fewer mistakes.

Perfume notes and the fragrance pyramid

Perfumers group the ingredients in a fragrance by how quickly they evaporate, and describe them as a pyramid in three layers.

  • Top notes sit at the tip. They are the lightest, most volatile materials, the first thing you smell and the first thing to go. Citrus, fresh fruits, light herbs and airy spices usually sit here.
  • Heart notes, also called middle notes, form the main body. They come through as the top fades and give the perfume its character. Flowers such as rose and jasmine, and warmer spices, are typical heart notes.
  • Base notes sit at the bottom. They are the heaviest, slowest materials, the ones that anchor everything and linger longest. Woods, musk, amber, vanilla, resins and oud are classic base notes.

This is not about families of scent. The pyramid tells you when you will smell something; a fragrance family tells you what kind of scent it is overall. For that side of things, see our guide to fragrance families.

How long each layer lasts

Every perfume, every skin and every day is different, so treat these as rough windows rather than rules:

  • Top notes: the first 5 to 15 minutes or so. They are bright and loud, and then they are gone.
  • Heart notes: they come forward as the top fades and carry the perfume through its middle stretch, usually noticeable from the first 20 minutes to an hour and often beyond.
  • Base notes: they start to show from around half an hour in and are what you smell for the rest of the day. Some base materials can still be faintly detected the next day.

The notes do not switch off like lights. They overlap and blend, so the scent slides gradually from one stage to the next. In Hyderabad heat, the whole journey tends to run faster, because warmth makes everything evaporate sooner. If your perfume seems to vanish, our guide on why perfume fades on your skin looks at the other reasons, from dry skin to nose fatigue.

Reading the perfume notes on our product pages

Our product pages set out the notes in these same three tiers where a product has a published pyramid. Here is how to read a few of them.

A fresh spray: PV Ice Pure Perfume

PV Ice Pure Perfume (from ₹249) lists apple, grapefruit and mandarin orange at the top, basil and lavender in the heart, and nutmeg, oakmoss and sandalwood in the base. So expect a juicy, citrusy burst for the first few minutes, a cleaner herbal middle, and a soft woody, slightly spicy finish by the afternoon. If you only smell it on a tester strip for ten seconds, you have only met the fruit.

A crisp spray: PV Kode Pure Perfume

PV Kode Pure Perfume (from ₹249) opens with bergamot and bergamot leaf, moves into aldehydes, clary sage, iris and orris, and settles on cedar and tonka bean. The top is fresh and green-citrus, the heart turns powdery and slightly soapy from the iris and aldehydes, and the base becomes woody with a soft sweetness from tonka.

A floral attar: PV Hina Attar

PV Hina Attar (from ₹149) lists bergamot and magnolia at the top, henna, jasmine, rose and white musk in the heart, and sandalwood in the base. The heart is clearly the star here: four notes against two at the top and one at the base. That tells you this is a floral, earthy scent for most of its wear, resting on creamy sandalwood.

A warm oud attar: PV Oud Zafran Attar

PV Oud Zafran Attar (from ₹149) lists cedar and honey at the top, nutmeg and saffron in the heart, and oud and rose in the base. Rose usually sits in the heart, so seeing it in the base tells you it stays with the oud through the long drydown rather than passing quickly. The pyramid is a guide the perfumer gives you, not a law of nature, and reading it closely tells you a lot.

Accords and single notes

Some notes on a list are single ingredients you can picture, such as bergamot or sandalwood. Others are accords. An accord is a blend of several materials that together create one new impression, the way a chord in music is several notes heard as one sound.

“Amber” in perfume is a good example: it is usually not one material but a warm, sweet accord built from resins, vanilla and similar ingredients. “Marine notes”, “woody notes” and “floral notes” on a list are also accords rather than a single thing.

So if a note sounds impossible to extract, such as sea air or fresh laundry, it has been built as an accord. It is no less real on your skin.

Why attars can feel more linear

People often say an attar “smells the same from start to finish”. There is some truth in it.

A spray uses alcohol, which evaporates in seconds and throws the lightest top notes into the air, so the opening is dramatic and the change to the heart is easy to notice. An attar is carried in oil, which sits close to the skin and releases scent more slowly and evenly. The top-to-base journey still happens, but it is gentler and the stages blur more. Our guide to attar vs EDP, EDT and extrait compares oil and spray in more detail.

Many traditional attars are also built around one or two main materials, such as rose, sandalwood or oud, rather than a long list of notes, so there is less change to notice in the first place. PV Tender Musk Attar (from ₹149), with peach and ylang-ylang over rose, white flowers, patchouli, vanilla and white musk, is a good one to try on your own skin: notice how softly it moves from fruity-floral to musky.

How to test a perfume before you buy

  1. Test on skin, not only on paper. A tester strip shows you the top notes. Your skin shows you the whole pyramid.
  2. Wait at least 30 minutes. Do not judge a perfume in its first minute. The heart and base are what you will live with, so walk around and smell your wrist again after half an hour, and again after a couple of hours if you can.
  3. Try no more than two or three at a time. Use one wrist each, and the inside of the elbow for a third. Beyond that, your nose tires and everything starts to blur.
  4. Start small. A 3ml attar lets you live with a scent for a few days before buying a bigger size.

You are welcome to try attars at any of our Hyderabad stores, open every day from 11am to 11pm. Put one on, go about your shopping, and come back to it before you decide.

Questions people ask

What are top notes in perfume?

Top notes are the lightest, fastest-evaporating ingredients in a perfume and the first thing you smell after applying it. They are often citrus, fresh fruit or light herbs, and they create the first impression before fading within roughly the first 15 minutes.

What does base note mean?

Base notes are the heaviest, slowest-evaporating ingredients, such as woods, musk, amber, vanilla and oud. They start to show from around half an hour after you apply a perfume and are what you smell for the rest of the day.

How long do top notes last?

Usually about 5 to 15 minutes, sometimes a little longer. Heat, your skin and the ingredients themselves all make a difference, which is why you should never judge a perfume only by its opening.

What is a perfume accord?

An accord is a blend of several ingredients that together create one new scent impression, like a chord in music. Amber, marine and many “notes” you cannot pick off a plant are accords.

Why does my perfume smell different after an hour?

Because the top notes have evaporated and the heart and base notes have taken over. That change is built into the perfume. Read the full pyramid on the product page to know what the later hours will smell like.
